Remote maintenance hosted in Switzerland

“Hosted in Switzerland” is a common argument. Here is what it actually means for a remote support solution — and what it does not say.

Where is the data hosted?

For FlowLINE, the website, the rendezvous servers (which connect machines to each other) and the relay servers (which carry the session) are hosted in Switzerland, in Valais, and operated by us.

Which law applies?

Hosting in Switzerland is, in particular, an important link to Swiss law, notably the Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP). Conversely, a provider subject to US law may, under certain circumstances, be required to disclose data even when it is stored abroad, including under the CLOUD Act. Hosting does not tell the whole story, but it is an important factor in determining which law may apply and which authorities may, under certain circumstances, request access to data.

What the relay server sees — and does not see

In a remote support solution, the session goes through a relay server. At FlowLINE, traffic between the technician and the supported machine is encrypted end to end: the relay carries the traffic without being able to read the content (screen, files, keystrokes). It sees that a session exists, between which IDs and for how long — metadata needed for operation and logging.

In practice

Three questions are enough to assess a provider: where are the servers hosted? which law applies there? is session content encrypted end to end, or readable on the server side? The answers are normally in the privacy policy — for FlowLINE, on the Privacy page.

Key point: hosting in Switzerland and end-to-end encryption address two different issues: hosting concerns, in particular, the applicable legal framework and exposure to certain foreign access mechanisms; encryption protects session content from being read by the relay server.
